Histopathological changes of the kidney, liver and bursa fabricus in broiler chickens fed fermented palm kernel cake

solid state fermentation of palm kernel cake (PKC) using Aspergillus niger resulted in a product with improved crude protein contents and a decrease in neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre contents. However, feeding trials using broiler chickens did not show increased intake or peformance. Analyses of toxins suggested that fermented PKC may contain between 40-50ppb ochratoxin A (OA), a mycotoxin produced by A. niger. In an experiment, untreated and fermrnted PKC (FPKC) was given to growing broiler chicks from 3-6 weeks of age. The concentraintion of OA detected in FPKC was about 50 ppb. Tissues from the kidney, liver and bursa of Frabricius were sectioned and examined under a light microscope for lesions. Lysis of the tubule epithelium and hypertrophy of the glomeruli were observed in kidneys of birds fed FPKC. There was also depletion of lymphoid elements from the bursa of Fabricius. Hepatic lesions occur less frequently than renal lesions. The severity of the histopathological changes was directly related to the concentration of OA in the diets.
