Effects of feeding inulin and fermented products on nitrogen excretion in growing pigs

An experiment was conducted with growing pigs to evaluate the effects of feeding inulin and fermented products on growth performance, and dry matter (DM), total nitrogen (TN), purine bases (PB) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration in feces. A total of 24 castrated male growing pigs were used in this experiment. They were fed one of the diets: 14% CP as control (CON), 14% CP with inulin (IN), 14% CP with fermented products (FER), and 14% CP with inulin and fermented products (IN+FER). Average daily liveweight gain was higher in pigs fed with diet IN+FER than pigs fed the other three diets. The dry matter (DM) and total nitrogen (TN) concentration in feces were not significantly different among treatments (P greater than 0.05). PB concentration in feces for IN+FER pigs was highest among the treatment groups (P less than 0.05) on d21. VFA concentrations in feces of pigs fed with diet FER and diet IN+FER (471.0 mmol/g and 456.0 mmol/g, respectively) were significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than those of pigs fed with CON and IN diets (339.8 mmol/g and 373.4 mmol/g, respectively) on d28.
