According to the objective and the tasks of this short-term consultancy the whole project was divided into two phases : 1. GPS/GIS based post-Harvesting infrastructure survey and mapping and 2. Topographic field survey and tree location mapping. The STC`s most important task from the methodical point of view was to verify the options for application of modern GIS/GPS-based technologies in view of large-scale implementation in West-Malaysia. A post-Harvesting infrastructure survey and mapping method was developed and tested during field tests in the "Jengai" Forest Reserve. The method is based on the data assessment with a Garmin 12XL GPS handheld receiver (if necessary complemented by terrestrial measurements) and the data processing, evaluation and map creation with the ArcView GIS. Compared with the present status, a considerable improvement within the scope of surveying and mapping of the infrastructure in logged-over forests can be achieved using the recommended procedure. The objective of the STC`s second phase was to find methods for an integration of tree mapping and tree marking with a topographic field survey. At present, the only way to combine these components is a 100% cruising prior to harvesting operations. The most important part is the topographic data assessment incl. mapping of special terrain features, because this provides reliable base data not only for many tasks on short-term planning level. It allows to compile topographic information over time into databases for large areas (e.g. the whole FMU). For the main part of the integrated pre-harvesting survey GPS receivers are not usable, because of the dense forest cover, so terrestrial measurement methods are unavoidable. High potential for real progress exists concerning the phase of GIS-supported field data processing, evaluation and visualization.
