In-passenger exposure to carbon monoxide along variety of route and ventilation situations

Carbon monoxide concentration was obtained inside and outside of a car on different routes and ventilation modes for a 4-month period from September to December. Trips were conducted during morning and afternoon rush hours. The route were of three categories: highway, countryside road and town road. Two types of ventilation modeswere air recirculation mode & air-fresh mode. It was found that the highway with air-recirculation mode has the highest mean CO exposure for mean =18.4 ppm. It was a little less than the standard air quality guidelines. In the other situations, the exposures with mean values of 6.1-6.2 PPM were less significant. Ambient CO concentration was low and non-representative of exposure of an individual, neither inside nor near the car or road. Mean value of outside CO concentration was lower than the inside and lower than the standard air quality guidelines. Investigation shows that infiltration and air change rate are the main factors of concentration of CO inside a car. Results represent that for air-fresh mode, inside-car CO concentration had good correlations with outside-car CO concentration and poor correlation with wind speed and ambient CO concentration. However there is no field measurement in Malaysia like the present one which aims at the study of the exposure concentration of a passenger in a car to traffic, road conditions and ventilation modes.
