With regard to species and gap conditions, significant germination variation of seeds from four tropical trees was found that at the gap and understorey of natural forest at Mata Ayer Forest Reserve, Perlis. Germination in understorey seemed to proceed unabated despite low irradiance level and low red/far ratio. Species showed different affinity to gap conditions. Acacia mangium germinated better in large gaps and gap centers, while Adenanthera pavonina, Ceiba pentandra and Hibiscus macrophyllus germinated better in small gaps and gap edges. This seed germination behavior of the pioneer species suggests that seed rain is more reliable for the regeneration of forest after a major canopy disturbance. Nevertheless, greater number of pioneer species needs to be examined before a general conclusion can be drawn for other tropical trees in Malaysia.
