Fermented milk feeding improves growth performance of weanling pigs

This study was conducted to evaluate the growth performances of weanling pigs fed a diet with fermented milk in comparison with those of pigs fed a commercial mash diet. Twelve pigs weaned at 28 d of age were used. The control group was fed a commercial mash diet. The experimental group was fed a diet which blended the control diet and fermented milk in a ratio of 1:5 (wt:wt). The feeding trial was carried out for 3 weeks. The result showed that dry matter intake of the experimental group was increased (p<0.01) by 9% compared with the control group. Average daily gain of the experimental group was also increaded (p<0.01) by 22% compared with the control group. The digestibilities of dry matter, crude protein and ether extract in the experimental group were significantly higher (p<0.01) than in the control group. Total VFA concentration, molar proportions of VFAs in the feces and plasma concentrations of various parameters were not different between the control and experimental groups while total protein was higher (P<0.05) in athe experimental group. From these observations, we conclude that feeding fermented milk greatly improves growth performances of weanling pigs.
