Fertilizer effects on some wood properties of two compensatory plantation species

The influence of nitrogen (N) and (P) fertilizers on wood properties of Acacia mangium and Paraserianthes falcataria were studied.Twenty five and 50 g ammonium sulphate and 60g mixture of triple superphosphate(TSP) and Christmas Island rock phosphate(CIRP) were applied per tree at all possible combinations during the early growth stages.Thinning carried out on the 6 year old stand made possible samples for the present study.Only about 25% of the total trees in each plot was felled.Cross-section disc of 2.5 cm thick were taken from three selected trees in each plot at 0.15, 3.5 and 6 m height of the clear bole.Each disc was used to measure the basic density and heartwood to sapwood(HS) ratio.The other portions of log were collected for strength testing.Statistical analysis found the effect of fertilizer on basic density to be significant, but found no significant interaction between different fertilizers and position of disc.A higher dose of N and P had the effect of reducing clear bole of log and causing lower branching in trees respectively.Effect of fertilizers on heartwood to sapwood(HS) ratio is significant in A. mangium but not so in P.falcataria. Trees treated with NIPI and NOP1 produced timber of higher strength both in green and air-dry conditions.Similar studies on other locations need to be carried out before any definite conclusion can be drawn.
