The Department of Agriculture [Quezon City, Philippines] has been receiving some reported changes observed on PSB Rc72H or Mestizo 1 by seed growers and millers. It was claimed that grain physical appearance has changed so with aroma, stickiness, and oiliness (gloss). It was also mentioned that the present 'Mestizo 1' is earlier in maturity and shorter in height than the previous or earlier Mestizo 1. To address the issue, hybrid parentals and F1 seeds from different institutions and seed growers were collected for grow-out tests, grain quality evaluation and molecular analysis. Reported change in Mestizo 1 was checked on F2 seeds of Metizo 1 as well as the parent lines of the hybrid. Results showed that agronomic traits such as plant height and maturity are within the range of the published traits of Mestizo. Likewise, there were only small deviations in the grain quality and physical attributes among samples tested to account for changes reported. Aroma was also detected both on 2AP concentration and molecular marker for aroma gene for the A and B lines, as well as the hybrid and F2 of Mestizo 1. Therefore, it can be said that the present 'Mestizo 1' still have the traits as it was released. The hybrid based on the data has not changed as claimed.
