Evaluation of ten promising garden pea lines for organic production in Benguet [Philippines]

The study was undertaken to evaluate the growth and yield of ten promising garden pea lines applied with organic fertilizers, to identify the best garden pea line for organic production, to determine the best organic fertilizer for garden pea production in Benguet and to determine the interaction effect of promising lines and organic fertilizer on growth and yield of garden pea. Results showed that the ten lines evaluated were statistically similar in number of days from sowing to emergence, from emergence to last flowering and to last harvesting, from flowering to pod setting, percent survival, node bearing last pod, and number of pods per cluster. They differed significantly in number of days from emergence to first flowering, from flowering to first harvest, nodes bearing first flower, plant height at maturity, pod length and weight, weight of marketable and non-marketable fresh pods, total yield and reaction to leaf miner and powdery mildew. Garden pea lines CLG, CGP110, 89-001 and CGP18A were the best promising lines based on their maturity, growth and fresh yield under organic production system in Benguet. They also gave the highest return on cash expense. Organic fertilizers application delayed emergence and first harvesting of garden pea, prolonged flowering duration and reduced fresh pod length. Application of vermicompost as organic fertilizer increased marketable and total fresh pod yield of garden pea. The promising line of garden pea and organic fertilizer application had significant interaction effect on plant height, pod length and total yield.
