Potential of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and L. plantarum for biological control of Moko disease of 'Cavendish' banana, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum Yobuuchi et al.

Experiments to determine if Lactobacillus bulgaricus and L. plantarum have antagonistic effect on R. solacanearum in vitro and to determine whether Lactobacillus bulgaricus and L. plantarum can effectively control Moko disease of banana were conducted in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Another experiment was conducted using CRD to determine wilting induction by R. solanacearum. Two types of inocula were used namely: R. solanacearum aqueous cell suspension at 10 sup 8 cfu/ml and R. solanacearum macerated rhizome tissues at 45 and 60 cc/400 cc of growing medium. Zones of inhibition were observed in both treatments. Lactobacillus bulgaricus and R. solanacearum measured 1.66 cm while L. plantarum and R. solanacearum had 1.39 cm. Thus, both L. bulgaricus and L. plantarum were antagonistic to R. solanacearum however, L. bulgaricus is better than L. plantarum. Wilt incidence increased with time in both levels of R. solanacearum-macerated rhizome tissues. The incidence was higher with an increased amount of inoculums. Apparent wiling was observed from 7 to 14 days after inoculation. After 14 days, wilting incidence incited by R. solanacearum-macerated rhizome tissues (60 cc/400 cc of growing medium), 66.67%. In R. solanacearum aqueous cell suspension at 10 sup 8 cfu/ml wilting incidence was 13%. All treatments had induced wilting but R. solanacearum aqueous cell suspension at 10 sup 8 cfu/ml was lowered compared to R. solanacearum-macerated rhizome tissues at 45 and 60 cc/400 cc of growing medium. L. bulgaricus and L. plantarum at 4 x 10 sup 8 cfu/ml significantly reduced the wilt incidence in 'Cavendish' banana seedlings by 66.91% and 33.33% respectively, 31 days after incubation at field condition with net.
