Optimizing the levels of rice hull, rice straw and binder for fuel briquettes

A Response Surface Methodology using mixture design triangular surface was used to optimize the operating condition of the briquetting process. Independent variables were rice hull, rice straw and binder. The important quality attributes of the product analyzed were: a) strength as indicated by number of drops to break, compressive breaking point, percent whole briquette after impact test, and b) bulk density. Through profile for predicted values and desirability, optimum mixture combination was established, namely rice hull = 50%, rice straw = 35%, and binder = 15%. Assessment of the predicted values obtained suggests that the optimum factors were acceptable with predicted values close to experimental values. The actual value of number of drops were much higher compared to predicted values, indicating that there might be a contributory factor to the material that was not captured by the model, yet, high actual value of number of drops signified that the product has a high level of strength capability. Moreover, this mixture has higher bulk density (0.52 g/cu cm), compressive breaking point (0.72, KN) and percent whole briquette after impact (99.27%). The heating value of the product produced was 16.49 MJ/kg.
