Partial stability analyses of horticultural characteristics and resistance of transgenic papaya (Carica papaya L.) to papaya ringspot virus (PRSV)

Partial stability analyses of selected horticultural characteristics and resistance to Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRSV) of transgenic papaya from selected lines 124-3, 132-2 and 142-3 were evaluated across T1 and T2 generations under Biological Level 2 (BL2) greenhouse conditions. The T1 lines showed higher percentage of resistance to PRSV compared to the T2 progenies. Traits such as plant height, stem diameter and length of internodes were used to characterize the phenotype of the transgenic plants while fruit weight, total soluble solids and number of seeds were among the fruit traits utilized to evaluate the fruits produced by transgenic plants. The T1 and T2 plants and their fruits exhibited typical morphology as the 'Kapoho Solo' plants. However, statistical analyses showed some significant differences between the transgenic and the control plants in terms of phenotypic characteristics including plant height, internode length, number of nodes to first flower and fruit traits: fruit and peel weight, TSS and number of seeds. Results of the stability analyses revealed that inheritance of resistance to PRSV from the T1 to the T2 generation was unstable while plant height, number of nodes to first flower, fruit total soluble solids and edible portion were among the stable traits observed.
