Yield potential of PhilRice-bred promising line and new rice varieties and their response to nitrogen management

The study was conducted at PhilRice CES, Nueva Ecija and Banaybanay, Davao Oriental in 2012 Dry Season (DS) and Wet Season (WS) to determine the yield potential of new varieties NSIC Rc216, Rc224, Rc226, Rc240, Rc202H (Mestiso 19), RC204H (Mestiso 20), Rc244H (Mestiso 29) and promising line 11-035 with PSB Rc18 and Rc82 as checks. Nitrogen (N) management treatments were 1) basal application of 6 bags complete fertilizer (containing 42 kg each of NPK/ha) during DS and 4 bags (containing 28 kg each of NPK/ha) during WS, with N topdressing of 35 kg/ha during DS and 23 kg/ha during WS when Leaf Color Chart (LCC) reading was below 4; and 2) N application of 200 kg/ha during DS and 150 kg/ha during WS. The rates of P2O5 and K2O in both N treatments were 60 kg each/ha. Grain yield of test varieties in PhilRice-CES ranged from 8.0 to 9.6 t/ha during DS while 7.4 to 9.3 t/ha during WS. NSIC Rc240 gave significantly higher yield than PSB RC18 and Rc82. During WS, NSIC Rc240, Rc224 and Rc226 out yielded both check varieties. In Banaybanay, the yield ranged from 7.4 to 9.12 t/ha during DS and 6.6 to 7.8 t/ha during WS. Mestiso 20 and NSIC Rc224 out yielded PSB RC18. Mestiso 20 gave comparable yield with NSIC Rc224 and PSB RC82 but significantly higher than the other varieties. High yield potential in PhilRice-CES and Banaybanay was achieved with N application of 200 kg/ha during DS. However, there was no significant difference in yield among N management during WS in both locations. Amounts of N based on LCC differed with varieties and locations.
