Evaluation of yield performance of IR64 derived genotypes under rainfed conditions in the Philippines

Varietal selection plays a crucial role in improving crop production in stress-prone environments such as those in rainfed rice areas. A split-plot field experiment with four replications was conducted at the research station of IRRI, Los Baños [Laguna, Philippines], in the 2012 dry and wet seasons to evaluate yield performance of two near-isogenic lines (NCS58 and NCS79) and one introgression line (YTH183) derived from IR64 under rainfed conditions. Fertilizer rates used were 0, 60,120 kg N/ha and 0, 60, 90, kg N/ha in dry and wet season, respectively. In both seasons, NCS58 and YTH183 showed better yield than IR64. At 0 kg N/ha, NCS58 and YTH 183 showed higher yield than IR64 in both seasons. At 60 kg N/ha, grain yield of YTH183 was always higher than that of IR64 and NCS79 was always slightly lower than that of IR64. NCS58 yielded better during the dry season but lower than IR64 in the wet season. Even at 60 kg N/ha, IR64-derived lines still produced more spikelets per sq m than did IR64 of the three IR64-derived lines, NCS79 always showed low 1000-grain weight in both seasons. Results indicate that NCS58 and YTH183 performed better than IR64 and are promising lines for stress-prone environments.
