Assessment of lowland rice (NSIC) grown in coconut oil mill effluent-affected areas

The pot experiment was conducted at Balatas Anayan, Pili, Camarines Sur [Philippines] from October 31, 2006 to February 6, 2007. The objective were to determine the soil and water quality performance and return on investment of NSIC 112 rice in the coconut oil mill (COM) effluent affected areas. The chemical characteristics of water samples were within the range of unpolluted water limits. The soils were slightly acidic and with adequate level of cation exchange capacity (CEC). The percent base saturation was deficient in the unaffected area while adequate in the affected areas. The chloride level at 1 km and 3 km were low and in the 2 km, 4 km and unaffected area, medium. The number of days to flowering, number of unproductive tillers and grain weight were not affected by coconut oil mill (COM) effluent at varying distance while plant height, number of tillers, grain yield and number of filled grains per panicle, percent unfilled grains per panicle, panicle number and harvest index were affected significantly. The correlation coefficient between distance and yield was negative and highly significant showing that the further the distance from coconut oil mill, the lower was the yield. The highest return on investment (ROI) was in the coconut oil mill effluent unaffected area.
