Yield performance of different varieties of hybrid yellow corn (Zea maize L.) under upland condition.

Production of corn for animal feeds occupies large areas in the lowland despite the fact that our country still has 16.3 M ha available upland area. Planting hybrid yellow corn intended for feeds in the upland areas will reduce the use of arable lowland that should be planted with crops for human consumption. However, choosing the suitable corn varieties for upland areas with high yielded and good quality should be considered. Thus, the study was conducted at Crop Science Experiment Station in Bataan Peninsula State University, Bangkal, Abucay, Bataan from October 2011 to February 2012 to evaluate the yield performance of five hybrid yellow corn varieties namely: 30B80, P336B, X640A14, X40A007, and P4097. Results showed that X640A14 had significantly higher average weight of fresh ears with husks and without husk than P336B and 30B80 but not significantly different from X40A007 and P4097. On the other hand, the average dry weight of 1000 grams kernel of X640A14 was comparable with 30B80 and P336B but significantly higher than X40A007 and P4097. There were no significant differences in the number of days to flower and number of days to harvest among varieties. The variety X640A14 obtained the highest yield (20.75 t/ha) among varieties. Planting of tested corn varieties during wet season and further trials in other upland areas in the province are recommended.
