Bioprospecting of natural dye sources in the province of Aklan [Philippines]

The heightened awareness and growing global concern for the environment, created interests in the use of natural dyes to color Philippine fabrics like Aklan Pina, abaca and other natural fibers. Along with this development, the present study attempts to conduct inventory of identified species and bioprospect the distribution of potential natural dye-yielding plants in the province of Aklan. Bioprospecting using the leaves of collected sample plants was done at the Common Service Facility (CSF) for natural dye of Aklan State University (ASU) in Banga, Aklan. Results showed that out of 75 dye-yielding species listed in Gampol (vol. 1 and 2), 27 are found in the province. From these species, Cocos nucifera (coconut), Swietennia macrophylla (mahogany), Gliricidia sepium (Madre de cacao) and Mangifera indica (mango) were predominant in the areas surveyed. On the other hand, 53 species collected from the four study sites yielded dyes that were then applied to pina seda [satin] cloth. The dye resisted fading when the cloth was laundered up to three times and when exposed to light for seven days,. The colors produced from the bioprospective potential species were in the tint of brown, red, yellow, green, and black. Out of the study's findings, IEC material containing a compendium of potential dye-yielding plants in Aklan was developed.
