Molecular prevalence and disease manifestations of arthropod-borne zoonotic Ehrlichia spp. pathogens in naturally infected ruminants

Ehrlichial infections belong to the group of rickettsial diseases customarily named in accordance to the host species and type of white blood cell most often involved. Tick-borne fever, disease of ruminants, is caused by Anaplasma (Ehrlichia) phagocytophilum. Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis (HGE) and Equine Ehrlichiosis are similarly caused by Anaplasma (Ehrlichia phagocytophilum). As one of the major emerging zoonotic diseases in the USA transmitted by ticks (Yu et al., 2007), epidemiological surveys in USA reports over 1,200 cases of human ehrlichiosis from 1987-1996 (McQuiston et al., 2003). In ruminant species, there is limited information about the disease; hence, diagnostic procedures in the identification and confirmation of Ehrlichia spp. as an etiologic agent in suspected cases are not well established. Moreover, little information is also available about the distribution of the ehrlichial pathogens affecting bovine species. The lecture presents the epidemiological distribution and clinical findings associated with field infections of Ehrlichia spp. in ruminants. Moreover, it discusses the implications of the data with regards to diagnosis and control of ehrlichiosis. Specifically, it will also elucidate the first published molecular evidence of ehrlichiosis in cattle in the Philippines and thus detail pioneering data on the applicability of PCR in the counrty's local setting.
