Adaptability of green soybean accessions in low and mid-mountain zones of Benguet [Philippines]

Ten AVRDC [Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center, Taiwan] soybean accessions and one local soybean variety were evaluated in three sites in Benguet representing low and mid-mountain zones. The trial locations were the municipalities of La Trinidad (1,332 m asl), Kabayan (1,312 m asl) and Bakun (1,702 m asl). In each location, an area was thoroughly prepared and divided into three blocks. Seeds were sown at 40 cm between rows and hills at two seeds per hill. The trials were laid-out following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Under La Trinidad condition, the ten AVRDC soybean accessions varied in their maturity, height at 30, 50 and 60 DAP, number of branches, number of nodes, weight of marketable fresh pods and total fresh pod yield. AGS 439 and 437 were the highest fresh pod yielders among the AVRDC accessions. The local check, however, produced the highest fresh pod yield out-yielding the ten AVRDC accessions. In Kabayan, soybean accessions AGS 439 and AGS 433 are the best in terms of earliness to flower and green pod formation. The accessions also produced the tallest plants and widest, longest and heaviest pods. The local variety produced the heaviest marketable pods. Results in Bakun show that the local soybean variety exhibited the tallest plants and highest number of pods and produced the highest fresh pod yield. AGS 438 and AGS 439 exhibited the highest number, widest and longest pods and produced the highest fresh pod yield among AVRDC soybean accessions.
