Strategies and initiatives on rice genetic resources conservation and research for climate change adaptation

Rice is constant to a Filipino diet and a staple food to majority of world's human population. However, the treat of climate change is a challenge to rice production and yield. Diverse rice genetic resources particularly varieties adapted to abiotic stress-prone areas are being tapped to mitigate effect of climate change. PhilRice Genebank currently holds 1506 traditional rice varieties that are being used for agro-morphological characteristics, grain quality. Tolerance to drought stress and DNA fingerprinting for genetic diversity and establishment of genetic identity. Total of 73 traditional varieties were evaluated for root traits and tolerance to drought. Three cultivars, P7-3-1 (PRR1001951), ARABON (PRR1004381), and BAKSALAN (PRR1001034) showed high shoot growth response at different intensities of progressive drought stress. In addition, 9 traditional cultivars were collected from submerged and/or saline areas in Cagayan Valley and Ilocos Regions. Conservation and research efforts are now focused on completing agromorphological characteristics based on 58 standard rice descriptors as well as identification and discovery of potential sources of novel gene for drought tolerance and other abiotic stresses. Complete genomic DNA sequencing of potential candidates for gene discovery is being initiated. Information is expected to hasten utilization of rice genetic resources in breeding programs.
