Strategic objectives of sheep breeding development in Russia

The available in Russia gene pool of sheep breeds on variety, qualitative structure and breeding value needs substantial improvement. Modern sheep breeding gene pool base has very limited number of domestic breeds and individual populations possessing a high degree of expressiveness of the most valuable productivity traits (fertility, milking, earliness, superfine wool and others). This limits their use in the creation of new breeds, as well as for commercial crossing. For this purpose it is necessary to subsidize the importation of rams of the best meat, fine-wool and half-fine-wool breeds from world gene pool, as well as fertile (Finnish Landrace) and dairy (East Friesian) breeds. As experiment has shown, the use of these breeds provides high selection and economic effect.
