Study on the possibility of biological control of citrus Asian psyllid, Diaphorina citri, in Iran

Citrus Psyllid is a serious pest of citrus trees and causes leaves deformation and weakness of plants by sucking phloem sap and injection toxins to the phloem. This pest plays a role as vector of HLB, one of the most destructive diseases of citrus. High reproductive rate and dispersing abilities of the vector consider as a threat for an epidemic of the disease in the region. One of the most important potential for controlling vector population is biological agent. By use of natural enemies we may be able to keep the vector population low and reduce the risk of diseases dispersion. To be able to record the vector and natural enemy population we have collected samples from tow lime orchard in two different locations from the highly infected regions of the Hormozgan province. Sampling has been repeated randomly every two weeks and we have counted the number of Psyllid and natural enemies (predator, parasitoids and possible pathogens). Results revealed a synchrony between the pest population and its natural enemies. A list of different predator and parasitoids has been collected from the samples during two years. Five predators, two ladybirds, Coccinela septepunctata and Cheilomenes sexmaculata , two spiders from Salticidae and Linyphidae family and one lacewings, Chrysoperla sp. Five parasitoids also has been collected and identified as follow, Prinomitus sp and Psyllaephagus sp from Encyrtidae family, Pachyneuron aphidis from Pteromalidae, Tamarixia radiate from Eulophidae and Marietta picta from Aphelinidae family. No pathogens were isolated from the samples during this period.
