Evaluation of the sodium bentonite efficacy on detoxification of feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1, on broiler cockerels performance

In order to study the effects of sodium bentonite on detoxification of feed( contaminated with aflatoxin B1)(AFB1) on performance of broiler cockerels, an experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with 4 treatment, 3 replicate and 10, day old chicks( Ross strain ) in each unit for 42 days. The experimental diets were: 1-Basal diet for each rearing period( control ) 2-Basal diet + 0.5 % sodium bentonite 3-Basal diet with 1 mg AFB1/kg 4-Basal diet with 1 mg AFB1/kg and 0.5 % sodium bentonite In this experiment average daily feed intake( DFI ), average daily weight gain ( DWG ) and average feed conversion ratio( FCR ) were evaluated weekly and in different rearing period and total period. At the end of experiment( 42 day of age ) relative weight of heart, liver and spleen. Production index ( PI ) were evaluated at the end of experiment.The result showed that AFB1 in broiler chick diets decreased significantly DFI in fourth week of age and total periods in comparison to other groups(P0.05). There was not significant difference among different groups for DWG in total period. AFB1 in diets increased FCR in total period and using 0.5 % sodium bentonite diminished the adverse effects of AFB1 significantly(P0.05). AFB1 could not create adverse effects on heart, liver, and spleen organs. The highest(248.92) and the lowest(173.32) average of production index belonged to diet with 0.5% sodium bentonite and diet contaminated with 1 mg AFB1/kg, respectively. This index reached to 224.72 in group that fed with diet contained AFB1+with 0.5% sodium bentonite, however it,s difference with the mentioned groups was not significant statistically. From this result it can be concluded that added 0.5% sodium bentonite to diet can diminish adverse effects of dietary AFB1 in broiles cockerels.
