Investigation the effect of Height& Sides of vertical yellow sticky traps with sex pheromone on Olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) capturing.

Due to need of Iran for imported crop oil, managers in this field have proposed extension of oil crop fields in Iran to reduce this need and increase crop oil products. One of the oil crops which have been considered in this program is olive. Around 20 years ago, there was ca. 15 hectares of olive orchards in Iran, which were mainly located at the three provinces at which this research was studied. The olive orchards reached more than 100 000 hectares by 2008. Most of the provinces at which the weather was to some extent favorable for olive production started to establish olive orchards. Fore example, Fars province, with more that 14 000 hectares of olive orchards, ranks first in Iran. Since few years ago, the only factor limiting olive production was weather condition. However, since 2004, the olive fruit fly has been a threatening factor for this industry. The results of this study showed that yellow vertical traps coupled with synthetic sexual pheromone was the most successful method. In this research, three heights (as minor factors) for trap installation and four sides (as major factor) at each installation height was considered. The research was done in a split plot design. At Kolaj region, the traps facing south had the highest catch followed by the ones facing west. In general, by increase in installation height, the catch rate also increased. In the other two areas, the results were not conclusive; however, in general, the southern and western sides had better results.
