Study On the Effects of rate and application methods of nitrogen fertilizer on competitiveness of corn (Zea mays) with weeds

Nitrogen is the major nutrient which crops and weeds compete for it. Since weeds are usually are more successful in this regard, therefore a proper fertilizing program such as splitting nitrogen over growing season could promote crop ability in competition. The present investigation was conducted to study the possibility of increasing such abilities in corn. The experiment was carried out at the farm of Weed Research Department in Karaj region during 2003. It was laid out in a randomized complete design with three factors in a split plot design. Methods of nitrogen application (drilling and broadcasted) were in main plots while rate of nitrogen fertilizer (recommended rate, 25% more than recommend and 25% less than it) and level of control (weed free and weed infested) as factorial combinations arranged in the sub-plots. Urea (46% pure N) was applied as source of nitrogen. Corn grain yield and some morphological traits were meseared at the harvest time. Results revealed that reduced rate of nitrogen fertilizer causes reduction in yield and ear height from ground. Stem height and dimeter In the weed free treatments were higher than weedy one. The trend of data was showd that the best rate of fertilizer was recommended rate and more amounts were not useful especially in weedy plots. It seems that drilling method of nitrogen application in the weed free plots with recommended rates was the best choice of treatments.
