The aim of the study was to elucidate the service properties and applicability of soft (alder) deciduous wood, modified in optimised conditions, and to evaluate the hydrothermal modification (HTM) potentialities of hard deciduous wood (ash). The principle of the chosen method is the one-stage treatment of wood in water vapour at elevated pressure. It has been found that, to improve the durability properties of deciduous wood by this method, lower temperatures are required, compared with other methods. The task of the Project was the study and compare the service properties of alder wood, modified at two potentially optimal (160o C/3 h and 170o C/1 h) regimes. The obtained results show that, by way of HTM, it is possible to improve the durability properties of soft and hard deciduous wood and to obtain higher hydrophobicity, form stability and durability against biodegradation. HTM treatment is especially appropriate for ash, resulting in the improvement of durability properties with lower strength losses. It has been found that the colour of the thermally modified wood in outdoor conditions is unstable. The market products designed for unmodified wood protect poorly the decorative properties of modified materials; for HTM wood special coatings should create, which could be the task of the further research.

Vietējo lapkoku koksnes plašāka izmantošana ļauj taupīt skujkoku celtniecības koksnes resursus un samazināt tropu mežu izciršanu. Lapkoku koksnes ilgizturības īpašību uzlabošana ir būtisks aspekts tās pielietošanas paplašināšanai. Termiskā modifikācija ir salīdzinoši ekoloģiska alternatīva biocīdiem šī mērķa sasniegšanai. Darba mērķis: noskaidrot pie optimizētiem apstākļiem hidrotermiski modificētas mīkstās (alkšņa) lapkoku koksnes ekspluatācijas īpašības un pielietojumu; izvērtēt cietās lapkoku koksnes (oša) hidrotermiskās modifikācijas (HTM) iespējas. Izpētei izvēlētās HTM metodes būtība ir vienpakāpes koksnes apstrāde pie paaugstināta spiediena ūdens tvaika vidē. Veiktie eksperimenti apliecina, ka lapkoku koksnes ilgizturības īpašību uzlabošanai ar šo metodi nepieciešamas zemākas temperatūras, salīdzinot ar citiem TM paņēmieniem. Modifikācijas rezultātā būtiski uzlabojas alkšņa un īpaši oša izturība pret koksnes sēnēm, pieaug hidrofobitāte (samazinās ūdens tvaiku un kapilārā ūdens uzsūkšana), pieaug izmēru stabilitāte (par 50-60% mazāka uzbriešana/rukums), modificētas koksnes virsmā mazāk iesūcas ūdens (lielāks slapināšanas leņķis). Vides faktoru (temperatūra, nokrišņi, saules starojums) ietekmē modificētas koksnes brūnā krāsa bālē. Dekoratīvo īpašību saglabāšanai nepieciešami speciāli pārklājumi.
