Enhancing labour productivity in smallholder agriculture

Low agricultural productivity in smallholder farming communities is a grave and increasing concern, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The characteristics of agricultural and labour productivity ae summarised. These include alternative (or improved) tools and equipment, uses of labour, methods of cultivation and crop production, uses of labour. The commonest constraints on implementing improvements are outlined but some examples of successful intervention are given. These provide indicators of where future success may lie and how they may be implemented.
