The Penan of Lower Tinjar, Baram, Sarawak : a community at the periphery

This study focused on the Penan of Lower Tinjar from various perspectives, namely livelihood strategy, literacy, education, health awareness and political affiliations. The study found that the Penan still maintain their traditional work to subsist. They are all engaged in farming mainly hill padi, hunting and fishing. All households earn less than RM600 per month with 83% of them earning less than RM300. Their education and literacy level is very low with 77% of the respondents never attended school while those who did dropped out at primary level. The community has a moderate level of health services. Moreover, their participation in the mainstream politics is lacking due to their small number and their contribution to the political system could be perceived as insignificant. Based on the preliminary findings, it is recommended that an in-depth research be carried out to further explore the problems faced by the Penans.
