Properties of rubber wood pressboard as insulating material in transformer application

Using the wet processing technique, pressboards were fabricated form matured rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) fibres. Three groups of pressboards were made according to the added content of phenol-formaldehyde resins: 1) )% (Blank Group), 2)5% (T5 group) and 3) 10% (T10 group). The material properties of the local pressboard were compared with the control group (namely commercial pressboard) that was made overseas and specifically designed for electrical transformer application. The material properties of the local pressboard and the commercial pressboards were determined in accordance to IEC 641-1, IEC 641-2, IEC 641-3, ISO 1924/1-2, ISO 2144 and ISO 287 standards. Using the commercial pressboard as reference, the material properties of the local pressboards were measured. From the results, the fabricated pressboards has passed about 58% to 67% from the tolerance range of IEC standard and were not suitable for electrical transformer design since they did not achieve the 100% passes. However, the rubber wood fibres could be suitable for making pressboard if the it was made by machine and using multi layer thin structure with the correct formulation of phenol-formaldehyde resin.
