Riverine fishery in Loagan Bunut National Park : present status, threats and management strategies

Loagan Bunut was gazetted as a national park in 1991 and covers an area of approximately 10,736 hectares (ha). The park is rich in fish diversity because a major portion of the area is basically floodplain. This is aided by the presence of a 650-ha lake at the centre of the park. Surveys on the riverine fishery in the area were carried in 2003 and 2004 using various fishing methods, interviews with the fisherman, collection of fish landings data, and market survey at Lapok town. Results of the surveys indicate that the park is an important fishing ground and peole who live in the immediate vicinity of the park are dependent on the fish in the park as a source of protein and income. The area is also an important spawning, nursery, refuge, and feeding area for freshwater fish. Therefore, it is very important to conserve the environmental conditions of the area within and outside the park. Major threats to the riverine fisheries in the area come mainly from changes in land uses and unsustainable fishing methods. There is an urgent need for habitat conservation and regulation of fishing activities in order to ensure the maintenance and sustainability of the diversity of fish in the area.
