Land preparation of the rice is one of the most important steps for paddy cultivation. Formerly plough is one of the main tools for land preparation, but now the farmer used tractor or cultivator. A retrospective study was conducted, at Tabanan Regency. Ten of farmers were selected as subject of study and interviewing subjects at the working sites, was applied. The results found are in using plough for land preparation since long time ago, resulted the deep of soil processed is constant because of the plough blade can be adjusted up and down. The plough can be turned to the right of left side so that all part of rice fiels except the corner can be cultivated. But, a moment, using plough seems to be uneconomicit is needed two cows. In fact, not all farmers have cow. While if using tractor or cultivator the right or left side and the corner of the rice field can`t be cultivated, due to the difficulty to adjust. It is associated by the fact that deep of soil processed become shallow so the fertility of soil reduced. Beside that using tractor or cultivator for land preparation need more fuel. The plough is easy to move out from one sector of rice field to another or through rice field dyke, bur tractor and cultivator for land preparation, there are advantages and disadvatages, that must be taken into account. It is recommended that from the ergonomics point of view, tractor and cultivator need to be redesign for more productive and friendly-user.
