Development of sandwich panel from recycled veneer and wheat straw

Iranian particleboard industry is now facing a limitation of raw materials.Many studies were conducted towards findings alternative raw materials to totally or partially substitute the raw material harvested from natural forest.This study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of utilising waste veneers generated from plywood industry and wheat straw from agricultural residues for manufacturing sandwich panel in which the veneer is used in the faces of the panel in the form of strands and wheat straw is used in the core of the panel. The variables used in this study were the percentage of veneer (V) abd wheat straw (W) used for manufacturing the sandwich panels in five levels (0% W+100% V, 25% W+75V, 50% W+50% V, 75% W+255 V, 100% W+0% V), press temperature at two levels (140C and 170C) and final thickness of sandwich panel in the press at two levels (10mm and 20mm). The waste veneers were provided by a local company producing veneers from Iranian beech wood and the wheat straw was obtained from a local wheat farm. Veneers were cut into strands of 50 mm length and width of 20mm. The wheat straw were cut into 40mm length. These materials were dried to 5% moisture content using a laboratory oven dryer. Other processing parameters were kept constant. Boards wereconditioned for two weeks after manufacturing. Test specimens were cut from the manufactured panels based on DIN 68763 in order to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of the panels. Data collected manufactured from 75% veneer and 25% whaet straw had highest modulus of rupture MOR. These panels are comparable to the conventional particleboard.The results of this study showed positive results in terms of utilising these waste raw materials for manufacturing sandwich panels as an alternative raw material for solid wood and conventional particleboards.
