The properties of forest plantation wood after through chemical modification method

The rate of product demand;wood based product that increasing from time to time will reduce the wood source. Many alternatives arise as a way to solve this problem. One of the alternative that has now been used is the forest plantation. Species selectivity is based on the high potential species that is high quality and fastest growth species.Acacia mangium (AM) and Acacia hybrid (AH) among popular species and selected species in this study through the chemical modification method. They have some disadvantages because it contains high moisture content that can be lead to other problems. To obtain the maximum usage of this product, the disadvantages of this species have to be overcomed. Both species aged 10-12 years old was gained from FRIM plantation as a raw material in this study. The potential of chemical such as Propionic anhydride (PA) and Succinic anhhydride (SA) were used to improve the wood properties. The chemical modification of wood using Sodium Formate (SF) as catalyst and DMF (Demetilformamide) as swelling agent was investigated. Proof of SA > PA of both wood was indicated by the increased in Weight Percent Gain (WPG), Volume Increase (VI) and was confirmed bt FTIR analysis. Reaction temperature at 120°C showed the highes WPG and VI followed by 100°C and 80°C. SEM studies showed that, fragmentation of cell wall structure occured decreased in order: 120°C (highest» 100°C (less damage»80°C (no damage) when compared with control wood. The entire observation AH wood better then AM wood during reaction in SA and AM wood much better in PA studies. Meanwhile the reaction of chemical was different within 180 minutes to 300 minutes in duration of modification method.
