Hydrogen production from gasification of palm oil empty fruit bunch using nanosized calcium oxide catalyst

Gasification of dry and finely ground palm oil empty fruit bunch (EFB) was carried out by using a temperature-programmed technique online with mass spectrometer to determine the production of hydrogen. Other products such as CO, CO2 and CH4 were also monitored. Temperature programmed gasification (TPG) was performed from 50°C - 550°C and also from 50°C - 700°C using 5% oxygen in He. Both experiments were held for 1 h at the final temperature. Bulk calcium oxide has shown to enhance the evolution of hydrogen. The effect of CaO:EFB ratio during gasification was also investigated. A significant increment of H2 production at lower onset and maximum temperature was observed by using nanosized CaO compared to bulk one. Interestingly gasification of EFB at mO°C using nanosized CaO also reduced the production of carbon dioxide. Hence, this nanosized CaO is considered as environment friendly catalyst as it reduces the amount of carbon dioxide released during the gasification. All the used catalysts were analyzed by using XRD and XPS.
