The results of studies carried on the distribution and harmfulness of European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) on maize (Zea mays) crops under conditions of Belarus are presents in this article. There was discussed the effectiveness of protection measurements which include cultural and chemical methods in reducing number and harmfulness of phytophage. Maximum harmfulness of the phytophage manifested in case of breakage of stems below the ears. Application of appropriate agricultural activities (crop rotation, tillage, corn harvesting on a low cut, sowing) significantly reduces the harmfulness of the stalk corn borer. Applying chemical methods such as insecticides with different active ingredients (lambda-cyhalothrin + hlorantraniliprol, lambda-cyhalothrin) has reduced plant damage for 63,6% - 87,2% and grain yield in these variants has raised for 34,1-45,7%.
