The effect of salinity on yield and yield components of safflower cultivars.

This plan was conducted to evaluate safflower cultivars under field and laboratory in National Salinity Research Center. At laboratory in germinator the seeds of each cultivars were planted in petri-dishes individually and treated by different saline water (0, 2, 8, 14 and 20 dsm-1). Varieties showed significant differences in germination rates. Esfahani and Faraman were better than others in germination stage .With increasing salinity levels, uniformity and speed of germination was reduced dramatically. Root and stem length and dry weight were significantly decreased with increasing salinity. With increasing salinity, root dry weight was affected more than the stem. In a split plot experiment that was conducted in a randomized complete block design, plant morphological traits and yield components were evaluated. Cultivars were planted in five rows in experimental plots at field and then was irrigated by ECiw = 2, 8 and 14 ds.m-1 throughout growth stages. In summary, at ECiw = 8 ds.m-1 Mahalli Esfahani and Sina with 92 and 88 grams seed per square meter produced more performance. The salinity levels of 14 dS.m-1 Faraman number 43/48 grams per square meter had the highest seed yield per unit area. After this, Sina was next rank by 35/52 geram per square meter. In these cultivars, despite of high resistance to drought stress, it seems that there was not relationship between drought resistance and salt tlorance.
