In order to investigate drought tolerance in wheat accessions of National Plant Gene Bank of Iran, 2560 wheat accessions were evaluated under normal condition (Agricultural Research Station, Karaj and Yazd) and stressed condition (Agricultural Research Station, Yazd) during 2008 to 2013. Morphological, agronomical and phenologic characters including: days to heading, days to flowering, days to maturity, days from heading to maturity, days from flowering to maturity, number of flowers/spikelet, length of spike, plant height, tiller number, number of spikelets/spike, number of seeds/spike, weight of hundred seeds, weight of seeds on 5 spikes, spike density, awnletted of spike, glume colour, glume hairness, sprouting tendency and number of nodes were evaluated according to IBPGR wheat descriptors. The mean comparison of the studied accessions with control cultivars for the traits of number of seeds/spike, weight of hundred seeds and weight of seeds on five spikes, were considered as criteria for selecting superior salt tolerant accessions. In this study, at least 51 accessions (43 bread wheat accessions and 8 durum wheat accessions) superior to the control cultivars in terms of drought tolerance were identified. The superior tolerant accessions identified in this research could be suggested to be utilized in breeding programs for drought tolerance.
