Comparison of matting disruption and chemical control for control of codling moth in apple orchards

Codling moth (Cydia pomonell Linnaeus) is regarded as a major pest on varieties of apple, pear, quince and walnut in Iran. Application of chemical pesticides is the main solution applied to control the damage and no enough attention is paid to other non-chemical control measures. Among the non-chemical , methods which is used extensively worldwide to control many insect pests including codling moth, is behavioral control using synthetic sex pheromones. Sex pheromones are used to achieve the purpose of pest control in 3 ways namely mass trapping, Mating disruption, and Attract and kill are used for direct control of pests. In present research work attempt has been made to control the damage of codling moth based on mating disruption technique in which we used exclusive dispensers installed(1000 dispenser per hectare) intensively with special arrangement on tree crown. In such a way to disrupt mating process of matured insects. Project carried out, based on the request(Shinetsu) of related form, in 3 treatments including:1- mating disruption, 2- mating disruption+ chemical control and 3- Chemical control(conventional local methods) in three locations namely: Damavand, Ghochan and Zanjan. Later work remained incomplete in Zanjan due to unpredicted spring freezing. Results from two other locations indicated that treatment of mating disruption + chemical control showed best results with means of infestation at 1.95± 1.538%and 3.5± 0.946% in ghochan and Damavand respectively and finally the highest rate of infestation observed with the treatment of chemical control treatment with means of infestation at 10.95±3.546 and 5.35±1.872 in Ghochan and Damavand, respectively.
