One of the most important crops is winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The objective of this study was to determine interaction effects of the investigation year (Y), nitrogen fertilizer (N) and year × N–fertilizer for two winter wheat cultivars on starch content. Field experiments with winter wheat cultivars ‘Bussard’ and ‘Zentos’ using four nitrogen top-dressing rates (N60, N90, N120 and N150) were carried out at the Study and Research Farm „Peterlauki” of the Latvia University of Agriculture, in 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. Average data of the investigation (3 years) suggest that the average starch content in the cultivar ‘Bussard’ grain was 674 g kgE-1, while in ‘Zentos’ – 680 g kgE-1, thus starch content between both cultivars did not differ significantly. The year and nitrogen fertilizer had a significant effect on starch content for both cultivars, while year×N-fertilizer interaction was not significant. Starch content in grain decreased after increasing nitrogen fertilizer rate. A significant negative correlation was determined in 2010 between starch content and nitrogen fertilizer for the cultivars ‘Bussard’(r=0.987) and ‘Zentos’ (r=–0.954). The analysis of variance for two cultivars and three investigation years suggest that winter wheat grain starch content was influenced by the investigation year showing the result for this factor of 89% (‘Bussard’) and 87% (‘Zentos’), respectively, while the influence of nitrogen fertilizer was also remarkable – 8% (‘Bussard’) and 9% (‘Zentos’), respectively.
