In different size dairy cow herds, there are different feed rations and different feed means used. In small herds (up to 9 cows) commonly used hay and roots with lower amount of grass and legume silages. With the rapid productivity increase, in rations are included corn silage and largest amounts of fodder. There was obtained data from 24 animal feeding experts in different regions of Latvia about feeding rations and feed means in different size herds. In herds with 50–100 cows there is larger amount of legume and grass silage (up to 50% of all forage). In different lactation stages, there are larger hay proportion and lower fodder proportion used in the feed rations. In large herds (101–200 cows) for cows is prepared total mixed ration (TMR), which in all phases of lactation is ensuring optimal amount of crude protein, fats and nitrogen free extract (NFE).
