Ecological peculiarities of the species Microtus arvalis (Rodentia, Cricetidae) in the conditions of elevated drought have been studied to propose some measures of its number reduction. In the last years, the climatic conditions have been characterized by low precipitation amount and increased temperatures during summer. The long-time drought provoked critical conditions for the development of agricultural plants a trophic basis of field voles. A significant negative correlation has been found between the density of vole colonies per hectare and the aridity index: r= -0.50 in 2011 and r= -0.36 in 2012. In the conditions of the Republic of Moldova, monitoring of population abundance includes two study stages in early spring and in autumn, when a special attention must be given to the voles populating perennial grass crops and winter wheat. Preventive measures are recommended in the case the density estimated makes 5 colonies per hectare on forage grasses in spring, and 10-15 col./ha on cereal crops and 50 col./ha on the alfalfa crop in autumn.
