Root and shoot growth of lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) cv. NSIC RC216 in relation to levels of phosphorus

Extensive root system is one adaptation mechanism of crops in unpredicted droughts associated with climate change. Hence, a pot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of applied phosphorus (P) on root and shoot growth of NSIC RC216, a lowland rice variety. Phosphorus levels namely: 0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/kg were arranged in Complete Randomized Design (CRD). Nitrogen and potassium levels were the same for all treatments. Applied P levels had no effect of on shoot dry weight. However, increasing levels of applied P significantly increased the root dry weight, length of longest root per plant, and total root length of rice plant. Root/shoot dry weight ratio and specific root length did not vary among P levels. The trial demonstrated the importance of P fertilization on rice root development.
