Morpho-agronomic and performance evaluation of Mestiso 48

On-site evaluation of promising varieties through the National Cooperative Testing (NCT) is necessary in determining their capability to surpass popular varieties. This also generates substantial information on their own strengths and weaknesses in the field against major insect pests and diseases. This study aimed to evaluate grain yield and quality, assess the reaction to biotic stress, and characterize morpho-agronomic traits of the PhilRice-bred three-line hybrid Mestiso 48. Data from field set-ups established in 20 sites for four seasons showed that it exhibited more than 15% yield advantage over the check variety, PSB Rc82, in 50% of the valid trails across regions. On average, it attained a yield advantage of 15.7% during the dry season, 9.9% during the wet season and 12.8% across seasons over PSB Rc82. Its long and slender grains are comparable to that of the check but with slightly higher amylose content. Its overall acceptability when raw was higher than PSB Rc82 but lower than IR64. However, results from a sensory evaluation by a panel of consumers showed that they preferred Mestiso 48 over both checks in its cooked state of 73.9%. Mestiso 48 plants are slightly taller than PSB Rc82 at 109 cm with a stable maturity of 110 DAS across seasons. It has intermediate to resistant reaction against blast, and intermediate reaction to bacterial leaf blight and sheath blight. Generally, Mestiso 48 is moderately resistant to green leafhopper and shows intermediate reaction to brown planthopper and yellow stem borer. It was released by the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) on April 2013 for commercial use and was assigned the registry number NSIC Rc318 H.
