Performance of micronutrient-dense rice selections in multi-location trials

Rice provides as much as 80% of the daily calorie intake of populations in developing countries, but is low in essential micronutrients such as Zinc and Iron in its polish form. Improving rice with high yielding ability and high concentrations of Zinc and Iron would have an impact on health and nutrition. Promising micronutrient-dense rice lines with good agronomic traits were evaluated in multi-location yield trails under irrigated lowland to determine the yield potential and adaptability for advancement to National Cooperative Trial. In 2014 DS and WS, 21 entries were compared to PSB Rc82 in 5 PhilRice sites; CES, Batac, Isabela, Agusan, and Negros. In 2014 DS, highest mean yield was recorded in CES (6830 kg/ha) with 9.6% cv while lowest in Negros (2985 kg/ha) having 31.7% cv. Consistent top five performers across four locations were PR35015-GA-5-5-1, IR10N255, IR10M300, IR10M238, and IR08M118 with 5083 kg/ha, 5075 kg/ha, 4881 kg/ha, 4840 kg/ha, and 4815 kg/ha, respectively. These lines had yield advantage over PSB Rc82 from 3.6% to 9.3% with an average Zinc content of 13.9 mg/kg to 20.9 mg/kg and Iron content of 2.0 mg/kg followed by IR10N255, IR10M238, IR10M245, and IR10M106. IR10N255 was the top yield performer across seasons with 4727 kg/ha followed by PSB Rc82 with 4581 kg/ha. IR10M300, IR10M238 and PR35015-GA-5-51 showed higher yield across seasons with 4245 kg/ha, 4511 kg/ha, and 4505 kg/ha, respectively. IR10N255, IR10M300, IR10M238, and PR35015-GA-5-5-1 were identified as potential entries to the NCT, the last frontier of variety development.
