Biology and management of common rice paddy eel (monopterus albus) in rice ecosystem

Experiments were conducted to determine the biology and generate some information needed for effective management of common rice paddy eel (CRPE) in irrigated lowland rice ecosystem in 2013 wet, 2014 dry and 2014 wet rice cropping seasons. The data on body length, weight, female and male ratio, and stomach contents of CRPE in rice ecosystem were recorded. Three botanical pesticides applied directly in CRPE tunnels and in canals built along levees were tested. CRPE in rice paddies has an average length of 38.36 cm and has an average weight of 64.62 grams. Forty-five percent of the populations were females, carrying 112 to 500 eggs. CRPE stomach contained small pieces of crustacean shells, shells of golden apple snails, insects, weed seeds and plant parts. There were around 104 tunnels/ha made by CRPE during wet season and 67 tunnels/ha during dry season. One hundred percent of tunnels directly applied with Tobacco dust, tea seeds and biton (Barringtonia asiatica) kernel remained closed. However, new CRPE tunnels were observed in untreated parts of levees. Tobacco dust and tea seed have no phytotoxic effect on rice plant when applied in canals along levees and has also no significant effect on CRPE barrowing activity.
