Variability, heritability, phenotypic and genotypic correlations and path coefficients of some agronomic characters in glaucous lines from a 'Safra Ma'an' wheat landrace population

Understanding the magnitude of genetic variability and heritability, as well as correlations among important agronomic traits, is vital in breeding and selection studies. This study evaluated genetic variability for quantitative traits, the direct and indirect contributions of important components of yield, and identified the most important selection criteria for a wheat breeding program. Thirteen glaucous wheat lines from a 'Safra Ma'an' landrace population were used. Significant differences were revealed among the 'Safra Ma'an' lines for all traits evaluated, suggesting the possibility of improving the traits. Estimates for genotypic coefficient of variation, phenotypic coefficient variation and genetic advance were high for grain yield per plant, thousand-kernel weight and kernels per spike. The highest heritability value of fertile tiller per plant was 98% while those of other traits ranged from 40 to 98%. Grain yield per plant showed highly significant positive genetic and phenotypic correlations with kernel weight, number of spikelets per main spike, and flag leaf area. Path coefficient analysis indicated that grain yield gave positive direct associations with fertile tillers per plant, thousand-kernel weight, spike length, and number of kernels per spike. Results indicated that the number of fertile tillers and the kernel weights of main spikes are major contributing factors in the selection of high-yielding wheat cultivars.
