Extent of linkage disequilibrium of maternal haplotypes in sheep genome

The study investigated the extent of linkage disequilibrium (LD) of maternal haplotypes in 20 microsatellite markers located in chromosomes 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 14 and 23 of sheep genome. More than 4890 maternal haplotypes of three Australian Merino sheep populations were selected for purposes of the study. Significant interallelic LD was observed in the three sheep populations. Interallelic LD was a result of breeding structure, random events and probably selection in favor of certain haplotypes. The observed disequillibria, between allele pairs at multiallelic loci were presented in the majority of cases by significant overall LD. As a consequence, overall LD was particularly prominent on chromosomes 2, 6, and 23 of sheep genome. In addition, properties of interallelic and overall LD such as intensity and dependency on the map distance of marker pairs were explored for Merino sheep populations. The results provided additional data to the common knowledge that sheep population structure and dynamics are affected by evolutionary forces such as gene flow, selection and many other random factors.
