Environmental protection: A prerequisite for sustainable agriculture and organic farming

Panĉevo is the economical and cultural center of South Banat, known regionally as a town with centuries of tradition in agricultural production, as well as for its famous fertile soil – chernozem. Since the oil production facilities of the Oil Industry of Serbia are largely situated on the territory of the city of Panĉevo – within the Pančevo Oil Refinery – it is a realistic assumption that all parts of the biosphere, including the citizens of Panĉevo as well, are adversely affected by its production. A detailed analysis of relevant documents in this study revealed that during the examined period (2000-2010), the City of Panĉevo initiated only one soil quality examination on its territory (2003/2004), with the aim of preventing soil degradation and pollution, as well for planning remedial measures regarding the potential negative influences of production in the Pančevo Oil Refinery and other industrial plants in the so-called South industrial zone of Panĉevo (CIP-Petrohemija, CIP-Azotara, etc.). This devastating information unfortunately represents a cross-section of the general state of the environmental protection sector in Serbia. It also depicts the unawareness of the importance of good environmental practices for the development of sustainable agriculture in Serbia, as well as for the prospective Serbian relevance at the global market of organic food.
