Seed germination of different plant species on sewage sludge from coal-field Kolubara (Serbia)

Coal exploitation in coal mine ―Kolubara‖ (Serbia) brings huge benefits to the Region, but, also, exposes the harmful effects on environment by generating big amount of raw materials. One of these is sewage sludge, called KEK, separated from wastewaters. The aim of this paper was to determinate sewage sludge`s characteristics and examine its effects on germination of plant seeds (white mustard, violet, lettuce, alfalfa, rape) grown on substrates with different sludge/soil ratio. The results showed the acid pH value of sludge, high organic matter content and small amount of available N, P, K forms and heavy metals. Absence of fecal contamination of sludge was observed. Highest seed germination rate was observed at white mustard in all experiments, while lowest germination percent was noticed at violet. In majority of treatments addition of KEK caused higher germination rate. This research confirms the validity of sewage sludge usage in improvement of agricultural/horticultural seed germination. These results showed that in majority of treatments, low abundance of KEK (especially treatments T1 and T2) caused small germination rate of examined plant seeds.
