Cadmium and mercury content in liver and kidneys of wild game caught in various regions of Serbia

Concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) in the liver and kidney of red deer and wild boars, and pheasants` liver were investigated. A total of 127 individuals (33 red deer, 67 wild boars, 2 hares and 25 pheasants) hunted in twelve Serbian regions were investigated. Median concentrations of metals (mg/kg w.w) in liver and kidneys of game ranged as follows: In red deer, Cd:0.03-0.49 and 0.03-3.00, Hg:0.01-0.02 and 0.01-0.06; In wild boars, Cd: 0.03-0.96 and 0.48-6.84; Hg:0.01-0.03 and 0.02- 0.32. There were higher concentrations of Cd and Hg in wild boar organs compared to those in red deer organs (p<0.05). Registered Cd level in pheasants was within 0.11-0.95. Mercury concentrations in pheasants were below the detection limit of 0.005 mg/kg.
